I just read this ‘When a Rescue Animal Chooses You’, and published it in this publication.

Thank you Matthew B. Johnson for this wonderful article, leading to a super long comment that I decided to publish as my own piece.

Your story was so touching that my highlighter broke and highlighted all over the place. Honestly, I was still restricting my highlights a lot.

Your story was the exact story I created this publication for (Pets & Animals). I was searching for stories just like yours. That’s why the publication was named Animal Rescue to begin with.

My dog Cherry is a 14-year-old sheltie who had to be rehomed because her human mum was just unable to take care of her due to medical issues. It was so sad, and she left her human mum she had known her whole life, and her best friend the cat, forever.

The moment I met Cherry in her first human mum’s house, sitting there on the couch, Cherry timidly approaching me but then moving away and barking at me, I was 99% sure I was going to keep her for the rest of her days, and give her the best second half of her furry little life.

I was only meant to be her temporary foster carer, and she was my third foster dog. She’s going to be my last, for a little while at least (small backyard).

I’ve written about how Cherry has saved me. And Cherry also writes on Medium — here are those pieces. I strongly recommend you read them, she’s great at getting her sassy little point across, but also touching as well.

Thanks again Matthew, you wonderful human you. Please be very much the opposite of a stranger. 😜
